Nail Surgery (Onychoplasty) – What it is
The ingrowth of a nail or group of nails into the skin causes discomfort and pain, and often leads to exostosis (when the bone shifts and protrudes laterally). It is a very common condition and can hinder movement. It occurs more frequently in adolescents and young adults, although all age groups may be affected.
The cause may be trauma that forces the corners of the nails to grow into the skin, poor nail care, fungal infections, genetic predisposition, or inappropriate footwear, among others.
Nail surgery (onychoplasty) is the solution for treating this condition.
The treatment involves the surgical removal of part of the affected nail along with the nail matrix, as well as the inflamed adjacent skin tissue, ensuring a permanent solution.
Onychoplasty includes a wide range of deformities, such as improper nail growth due to raised skin ridges, deformities caused by nail biting, and others, all of which can be successfully treated.
